The condition of the six-year-old girl who was sexually assaulted inside a public convenience at Badarpur on Friday is reported to be stable, said doctors at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences where she is being treated.
They said the victim underwent a surgery on Saturday as she had sustained injuries in her genitalia. There were indications that something had been inserted into her through the vaginal orifice but nothing was retrieved. However, due to the damage caused to the genital tissues, the surgery had to be performed.
“The girl’s condition, though stable, is being closely monitored,” said a hospital source.
While no arrests have been made in connection with the incident, the police have registered a case of rape and attempt to murder. Scores of people have been detained and questioned by the investigators to identify the person who brutalised the girl.
A police officer said that the slum where the girl lives does not have an assured supply of water and dwellers go the nearby public toilet (where the girl was found) for daily activities such as bathing. On Friday afternoon, too, she had gone to take a bath when the accused allegedly overpowered her and raped her.
He also injured her in the neck and other parts of the body including her private parts, apparently in an attempt to kill her. The accused then fled from the spot. Later, she was spotted by another person who had gone to use the same toilet.
To register their protest against the incident and other similar ones, a large number of people blocked parts of Mathura Road near Badarpur on Saturday.
Similar protests were held across the Capital last week after a similar incident happened in East Delhi’s Gandhi Nagar in which a five-year-old was raped and brutalised by two men.
