A medico-legal case has been registered and a police investigation has been initiated into the death of a baby girl hours after her birth at the city government’s Rao Tula Ram Memorial Hospital.

The Medical Superintendent of the Hospital, Sangeeta Basu, said: “The baby was born at 2.05 p.m. on August 14 and she died around 4 a.m. on August 15. She was perfectly healthy, had a normal birth and weighed 3kg. She was put in the post-natal ward, along with her mother. If a child has any problem, we keep him or her in a nursery. The child was perfectly healthy and hence kept in the normal ward.”

Doctors in the hospital did not rule out foul play. This was the couple’s second daughter.

“The child suckled around 1 a.m. on August 15 and, that is a very healthy sign. We are awaiting the forensic report to know as to what really happened,” said Dr. Basu.
