The cash van driver, who had driven away with Rs.49 lakh in cash from Karol Bagh in Central Delhi on Wednesday, has been arrested along with his cousin. The police claim to have recovered the stolen amount.
The cash van owned by a private security agency started out from its office in Jhandewalan with Rs.83 lakh for replenishing ATM machines. Cash custodians Amit Mishra and Kapil Kumar were travelling along with driver Sanjay.
“They deposited Rs.34 lakh in two ATM machines and then they went to Padam Singh Road to load Rs.29 lakh in another ATM machine. The custodian locked the box with the remaining cash in the van and when he along with his colleague was entering the ATM booth, he saw the driver driving away with the cash box containing Rs.49 lakh,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police Alok Kumar.
The cash van was found abandoned some distance away in Raigarpura. “We obtained details about the driver, who had identified himself as Sanjay, a resident of Harkesh Nagar in Okhla. Inquiries revealed that it was a fake address.
His voter identity card, a copy of which he had submitted to the employer, was also forged. Teams were formed to track him down and finally his real identity was established as Satish Yadav (39). He hails from Etah in Uttar Pradesh,” said the officer.
Teams were despatched to Etah and he was arrested along with his accomplice Shailendra (26).
The money was also purportedly recovered from them. “After the driver abandoned the vehicle, he had decamped with the cash with his cousin on a motorcycle. The motorcycle has also been impounded,” said Mr. Kumar.
During interrogation, Satish purportedly disclosed that his cousin Shailendra worked as a driver with the same company and had introduced him to his employer about a month ago.
He joined the company under the pseudonym Sanjay allegedly with an intention to commit theft.
The accused also roped in Shailendra’s younger brother Chhotu.
