Awareness campaign on metro, buses

January 31, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:34 am IST - New Delhi:

In order to encourage people to vote during the February 7 polls here, the Election Commission will carry out an awareness campaign targeting commuters at Delhi Metro stations and Delhi Transport Corporation buses. The Delhi Chief Electoral Officer (CEO)’s Office will launch a campaign at all metro stations and DTC buses here on Saturday.

“Lakhs of people travel daily by metro and DTC buses, and this is one of the best modes to reach out to them. At metro stations, an appeal will be made to the people through public announcement system to cast their voters. Besides, we will also display “Delhi Votes” on LCD screens inside the metro and buses,” the Delhi CEO said. Apart from DMRC stations and trains, a campaign will also be run in DTC buses, aiming at increasing voter turnout, he said.

“We will also appeal to people travelling in DTC buses by displaying ‘Delhi Votes’ on LCD screens installed inside the buses,” Mr. Bhushan also said.

In the 2014 Lok Sabha election, Delhi had recorded around 64 per cent polling in the battle for seven seats while in the 2013 Assembly poll, the Capital had recorded over 66 per cent voting. Over 1.33 crore voters are eligible to exercise their franchise in the February 7 elections while a total of 11,763 polling stations will be set up for the exercise. — PTI
