The Uttarakhand government on Monday said it will institute an environment conservation award named after Chipko movement activist Gaura Devi and urge the Centre to issue a commemorative postage stamp in her honour.

Giving the assurance to a delegation of environment activists led by MLA Rajendra Bhandari, Chief Minister Harish Rawat said conserving the environment has been a tradition in the State and protecting forests an integral part of public life.

Describing trees and rivers as integral to the life of people in the State, he spoke of a bonus scheme launched by his government for promoting tree plantation and developing water reservoirs.

The State government will soon institute an award named after Gaura Devi to honour people who contribute to environment conservation and also request the Centre to issue a commemorative postage stamp in the honour of the Chipko movement activist, Mr Rawat said.

The delegation also submitted a memorandum to the CM on behalf of an organisation named after Gaura Devi for launching ’Mera Ped Mera Dhan’ scheme to incentivise and promote tree plantation and starting a bonus scheme for developing small reservoirs. - PTI
