Avoid going outside: docs issue health warning

Air pollution is a slow killer and winter witnesses the worst air quality... exercising outdoors could mean compromising your health, this was the ‘health warning’ issued by top doctors in the city on Wednesday as part of the #myrighttobreathe campaign.

“As concerned citizens, we urge the public to make the first move to help Delhi get back clean air. When air pollution reached critical levels last year, our group took to the streets to raise awareness and demand emergency measures from our government,” said the citizens’ action group.

‘Need civil actions’

“The solution lies in responsible civil actions from employers, administrators, corporations, medical community and the larger public,” the group added.

According to the doctors, including Dr. Naresh Trehan, cardiologist, founder Medanta Medicity; Dr. Arvind Kumar, head of Department of Chest Surgery at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital; Dr. Harsh Mahajan, founder and chief radiologist at Mahajan Imaging, citizens must minimise their exposure to outdoor air.

Doctors advised Delhiites to monitor local air quality alerts to know which activities can be safely performed outside and exercise at least 200 metres away from road/construction. People also need to learn about proper use of pollution masks, they added. “Consider this a health warning and don’t ignore it,” said the doctors.
