The Delhi zoo authorities are considering two options to ensure there is no repeat of Tuesday’s incident, when 20-year-old Maqsood was killed by a white tiger after he fell into its enclosure.
Giving details about measures being considered to prevent such incidents, zoo veterinarian Paneerselvam said on Friday: “We have taken measurements for fencing and did a trial-run to assess the visual impact of the additional barrier.”
Dr. Paneerselvam added: “The proposal is to increase fencing by six feet. We are looking at two types of fencing — the chain lock and raising the height of the hedge. However, we have to take into account the fact that children are our most important visitors. The zoo has to remain an enriching and enjoyable place for them.”
Zoo curator R.A. Khan added: “We did put up the fence to assess the visual impact and see if it offers any protection. However, there is nothing we can do if visitors misbehave and put themselves in danger.”
Stating that the Central Zoo Authority is yet to give its final approval on the various preventive measures to be brought in, the Authority’s member-secretary B.S. Bonal said: “We still haven’t got a final report on the entire incident and what they propose to do to prevent incidents like this from happening again. We will see about the fence when the final proposal is send to us.”
Meanwhile, white tiger Vijay continues to remain under observation and is said to be doing well.
“The animal has shown no aggression, and is eating and drinking well, and seems comfortable,” said Dr. Paneerselvam.
