A day after thefts by a security agency employee at Kotak Mahindra ATM outlets on the outskirts of the Capital came to light, the police on Monday said more than Rs.1 crore has been stolen from a total of 13 outlets.
“The total amount stolen adds up to Rs.1,14,58,700. The accused, Deepak Rana, has struck at 13 of the 14 ATM outlets which he was in charge of in West, North-West and Outer Delhi,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer) B.S. Jaiswal.
He further said that raids were being mounted at the possible hideouts of Deepak (28), but he has not been traced so far. Deepak, a native of Uttar Pradesh, was staying in Tihar village in West Delhi. He was an employee of Scientific Security Management Agency and was in charge of replenishing the ATM outlets of Kotak Mahindra.
The theft came to light when the bank officials reached their ATM outlet in Pushpanjali on Sunday afternoon following a complaint by a security guard about the machine being out of order. But the officials found that the machine had run out of cash. The further investigation revealed that Deepak had stolen cash from several ATMs in a similar manner. The bank officials had confirmed a theft of Rs.40 lakh at seven ATM outlets till late on Sunday night and seven more ATMs were under scrutiny.
A case has been registered at Mangolpuri police station.
A statement from Kotak Mahindra said: “It has been brought to our attention that there has been some shortfall in the cash loaded in some of the bank's ATMs in New Delhi. The bank outsources the cash loading operations for its ATMs to specialised agencies and no employee of the bank is involved in it. The agency has filed a police complaint in the case and the police are investigating into the matter. There is no impact, whatsoever, on the bank's customers. There is no disruption in ATM operations of the bank in Delhi.”
