Partially burnt body of the victim recovered from Panipat
A 25-year-old woman was murdered allegedly by his paramour at Rohini here on Tuesday. The partially burnt body of the victim has been recovered from Panipat in Haryana at the instance of the accused.
The sensational murder came to light when an alert neighbour of Umakant Pandit called up the Police Control Room around midnight on Tuesday night saying he had seen two men dragging out a red bag from a flat in his neighbourhood with blood dripping from it. They later drove away in an Alto car. The caller told the police that the duo had put on hand gloves and also provided the registration number of the car.
When the police reached the spot in Rohini Sector 2, they found blood stains in the flat.
The neighbours told the police that one Umakant was staying with Rachana in the flat.
A raid was mounted at the Rohini Sector-21 house where the Alto car was registered. The police found his wife and two minor daughters at the address. Simultaneous raids were carried out at other hideouts of the accused, but he could not be traced.
Umakant was arrested in Rohini Sector 2 on Wednesday when he returned to the flat to destroy evidence.
Umakant purportedly told the police that he became friendly with Rachna while he stayed in Aman Vihar and the two developed illicit relation. When Rachna’s husband Banarasi Dass, who was physically challenged, objected, she deserted him to stay with Umakant who bought a flat for her in Rohini Sector 2.
Soon Umakant found it difficult to bear the expenses of two families and was also being constantly pestered by Rachna to marry her. Rachna’s husband had also filed several complaints against him.
Desperate to get out of this mess, Umakant decided to eliminate Rachna, the police said.
As per the plan, Umakant arranged for a bag to dispose of the body after the murder and allegedly strangled Rachna to death on Tuesday morning. But he could not find an opportunity to dispose of the body during the daytime. Late in the evening, he confided in his friend about the murder and sought his help in disposing of the body. The two then stuffed the body inside the bag, drove to Panipat and set the body afire near Rasoi village.
