Five of his friends seriously injured, admitted to hospital
The son of an Assistant Commissioner of Police was killed and five of his friends were seriously injured after their vehicle rammed the road divider in Ashok Vihar here on Wednesday night. While one of the injured has been discharged, the other four are still under medical observation.
The accident took place when Vikas Mann and his friends were on their way to have dinner around 10-15 p.m. They were close to the area police station when Vikas lost control over the vehicle and it hit the iron-grill installed on the road divider. The sports-utility vehicle dragged some distance before it overturned, badly damaging its roof.
The bystanders rushed to the spot to rescue the occupants. Following a distress call, the police also rushed in. The victims were taken to Bara Hindu Rao Hospital where one of them was declared dead. He was identified as Vikas, the son of ACP B.R. Mann, a resident of Paschim Vihar.Inquiries by the police revealed that Vikas and his friends had gone to a gymnasium in Paschim Vihar, where they stayed for a while and then decided to have a meal at an eating joint in Ashok Vihar. They were on their way when tragedy struck. It is learnt that Vikas, who had done post-graduation in management and was looking for a job, had only a little while before the accident called his family to tell that he was with his friends and would be back soon.
The injured were identified as Rahul Kaushik, Pulkit Gupta, Prawesh Dahiya, Kamal Garg and Vaibhav Mittal. “Two of the injured were later shifted to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital where they have been kept in the intensive care unit and two others have been referred to Sri Action Balaji Hospital. The fifth was discharged after treatment. Their families have been informed about the accident,” said a police officer.
The police have registered a case of causing death due to rash and negligent driving. “We are waiting for the post-mortem report,” said the officer.
In another accident reported around midnight, another SUV ploughed into some rickshaw-pullers sleeping on the pavement at Laxmi Nagar in East Delhi. Three of them sustained injuries and were admitted to hospital. The erring driver, Manisha, a resident of Kausambi in neighbouring Ghaziabad, was arrested and booked for rash and negligent driving causing injury. She was later released on bail.
