The Madhya Pradesh High Court has rejected the anticipatory bail application of former State Legislative Assembly Speaker Sriniwas Tiwari in connection with a case of alleged irregularities in the appointments of some people in the Vidhan Sabha secretariat.

Justice G. S. Solanki on Saturday rejected the plea of Mr. Tiwari saying: “It is a case where custodial interrogation of the applicant is necessary.”

An FIR was registered against Mr. Tiwari and 16 others on February 28 for alleged irregularities in appointments at the State Assembly secretariat in Bhopal between 1993 and 2003.

Tiwari, 89, moved the anticipatory bail on the ground that he was old and ailing. Besides, the former Assembly Speaker’s plea said that he has been implicated in the case as his son Sunderlal Tiwari, Congress MLA from Gurh Assembly constituency in Rewa, was vocal against Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan.

Justice Solanki, while turning down the bail plea, said: “Usually every elderly person has to face such type of ailments.”

Earlier, the Bhopal Sessions Court had rejected Mr. Tiwari’s bail application on March 9, stating that the charge against him was of a serious nature due to which it would be improper to give him bail. - PTI
