Another attack on Prof. Saibaba

: Delhi University professor G.N. Saibaba, who was recently granted bail by the Supreme Court in connection with his alleged links with Maoists, was on Monday allegedly abused at Ram Lal Anand College, where he used to teach.

According to sources, Mr. Saibaba had come to the college on Monday to submit a letter to the Principal and College Staff Association when some students, allegedly belonging to the ABVP, barged inside the Principal’s room and allegedly started abusing him.

This is the second time that the professor has alleged misbehaviour by students on the college premises.

Two days ago, when he was attending an event, a group of students had called him names. Other students had to come to his rescue.

Sources added that the attacks had been lead by ABVP member Chhatarpal Yadav.

The incident has drawn criticism from teachers and students alike.

Nandita Narain, president, Delhi University Teacher’s Association (DUTA), said: “DUTA strongly condemns the attack on Dr. Saibaba by a group of anti-social elements.

Had it not been for the protection given by some faculty members and students, the professor could have suffered grievous injuries.”

“These elements entered the Staff Room and had a scuffle with teachers, and continued to shout ugly slogans even as an emergency meeting of the Staff Association was taking place. The DUTA expresses grave concern that the college administration as well as the local police did not prevent this violent intrusion,” she added.

The teachers’ body has also appealed to the Vice-Chancellor for his immediate intervention in the matter.

The meeting of the Staff Association had been called to discuss the professor’s rejoining. The Principal has also constituted a committee to look into the issue.
