Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Assembly Harsh Vardhan on Monday alleged that Aam Aadmi Party workers were involved in two “incidents” in the city ever since their party was voted to power. Addressing the House, Dr. Vardhan said that close to 200 AAP volunteers recently walked into the Rajan Babu Tuberculosis Hospital along with residents of a nearby JJ cluster. “Since the hospital has a lot of empty land that belongs to the government, the volunteers told the residents that the land belongs to the people and they can go ahead and set up jhuggis wherever they please,” he alleged.
In another incident in Rohini, Dr. Vardhan said that MCD councillor Shobha Vijender, founder of the NGO Sampurna, was accused by AAP MLA Rajesh Garg for “encroaching” the community centre that her NGO is the care taker of. The police refused to lodge an FIR on the issue, he added.
Speaking to reporters, Ms. Vijender said Mr. Garg along with a lot of AAP volunteers and residents surrounded the community centre and accused her of encroaching the community centre. “I am the caretaker of the property. I pay the electricity bills and take care of the maintenance. Mr. Garg, who had come to hold a religious function, first questioned the amount of rent for the community centre and then started creating a ruckus that I have encroached the space and appealed to the people who were with him to intervene,” she said.
Terming the act “anarchy”, Ms. Vijender said that she had emailed and called both Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Urban Development Minister Manish Sisodia but to no avail. “I met Mr. Kejriwal on Monday and he said he will look into the issue,” she added.
However, Delhi Assembly Speaker M.S. Dhir did not allow a discussion on the issue in the House and told Dr. Vardhan to bring it up in the House on Tuesday.
