In order to achieve its goal of making Delhi a slum-free city, the Delhi Government will start allotment of houses under the Economically Weaker Section category from April this year, Industries Minister Ramakant Goswami said during a visit to a construction site at Pootkhurd in North-West Delhi on Friday.
With the projection of population for 2021 being 230 lakh and an additional 24 lakh housing units needed to meet the demand, the officials said 9.6 lakh units would be created through provision of additional floors and floor area ratio (FAR) while 1.31 lakh new housing stock would be required each year, of which 75,000 would be needed in the EWS category.
Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation chairman Chetan B. Sanghi, who briefed the Minister during the visit, said to make Delhi slum-free, the DSIIDC was constructing 45,000 houses.
Of these, 13,820 houses have already been constructed at Narela, Bawana, Bhorgarh, Ghoga and Baprola under JNNURM scheme for slum dwellers. The Corporation has also started construction of 14,200 houses at Pootkhurd and work has been awarded for another 4,560 houses at Tikri Kalan.
Apart from this, he said, the tender for another 8,420 houses is being initiated while the detailed project report for 4,000 houses has been submitted and is pending approval.
