An alleged bootlegger was injured after being shot at by a police party conducting a raid at his house in South-East Delhi’s Sangam Vihar on Tuesday evening. The police maintained that it was an act of self defence as the team was assaulted by the injured man and his accomplices.
Four persons have been arrested in the case.
According to the police, the raid was conducted after receiving a tip-off that one Hari Singh and his sons were illegally storing and selling illicit liquor outside their house in lane number 5 of Sangam Vihar.
Upon this, head constable Sanjay Tyagi along with two constables Satpal and Vijay Kumar reached outside Hari Singh’s house around 7-15 p.m. where they found that Hari Singh and his family members were selling illicit liquor .
The policemen managed to overpower Singh’s son Rahul and told others to surrender but Singh told his family members to attack the police personnel. In his complaint, Tyagi told the police that the family started pelting stones and hit them with wooden sticks and iron rods.
As the scuffle was on, Rahul and his father tried to snatch constable Satpal’s service pistol.
Seeing this, Tyagi took out his own pistol and brandished it to deter the attackers.
This had little impact as the men barged towards the head constable on which he fired and a bullet hit Rajkumar on his left leg.
At this, Singh handed over a carton of alcohol bottles to two of his accomplices who fled the spot. In between, Tyagi had called for reinforcements and the situation was brought under control. A case has been registered and four men, including Singh and his sons Rahul and Rajkumar, have been arrested.
