The motorcycle used in Saturday’s ATM robbery in Kamla Nagar is suspected to have been procured from Aligarh, police sources said.
The police now suspect that gangs based in the western U.P. town could be linked to the crime.
On Saturday, the staff of a cash van were robbed of Rs.1.5 crore while loading it into an ATM.
The two motorcycle-borne robbers also shot dead the security guard. Several police teams as well as special units are probing the case.
“Investigations have revealed that the suspects could have come from Aligarh or could have bought the vehicle from there. The registration number plate on it belongs to Delhi and was affixed to mislead the probe,” said a source in the Delhi Police Special Cell.
He added that teams have been sent to Aligarh and are conducting raids there.
Sources in the local police, however, said the number plate on the motorcycle was found to be of a Hero Glamour motorcycle stolen from Pitampura some days ago. The owner of that vehicle is also being questioned.
They remained tight-lipped about the Aligarh connection.
Joint Commissioner of Police (Central Range) Sandeep Goel said scores of people have been questioned in connection with the incident. He added that some insider’s role could not be ruled out as yet. A door-to-door verification of residents in areas such as Chandrawal village, Pul Bangash and Malka Ganj is also underway.
Given that the faces of the two suspects were covered with helmets, the police are using the criminal dossier system to match their physical features with those of known criminals.
“Using the Computerised Remote Identification of Suspects, we are matching the estimated height and weight with the ones mentioned in our records. We are hopeful that it could help us at zeroing in on actual identities of the two suspects,” said a senior police officer.
The bullet which killed security guard Satinder Singhwas fired from a .32 pistol, added another police officer.
