A final year medical student was found hanging in her hostel room at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on Thursday. The student, identified as Supriya Meena, hailed from Surat district of Gujarat, and according to the Hospital authorities was a bright student.
“She had passed her first and second professional examinations in first attempt. However, she was unwell since 2010 and was under treatment in the Institute’s psychiatry department,” said a senior official.
Giving details about the incident, the Hospital administration noted that at around 11 a.m. on Thursday the hostel attendant of Girls’ Hostel No. 10 received a phone call from Supriya’s mother, Prita Meena, informing her that her daughter’s mobile was not responding to her call.
“The lady security staff and the deputy security officer were informed immediately and they rushed to the room (No. 56) in Girls’ Hostel No. 10. There was no response on knocking the door. The door was locked from inside. The institute’s security personnel forced open the door and found the girl hanging from the ceiling fan,” said an AIIMS official.
The Delhi Police were immediately informed and they took over the case. “The girl was taken to the casualty where the doctors examined her and found her in rigor mortis and she was declared brought dead to the emergency. Police also seized a suicide note. The case is under police investigation,” said the official.
“We have learnt from students living in the same block that the mother of the deceased had been staying with her for the past one week and had left on Wednesday. The entire AIIMS family deeply mourns and condoles the unfortunate and sudden demise of a young and promising medical student of the Institute,” said the AIIMS official, adding that in view of the incident the Institute was looking at pruning the ongoing PULSE 2013, its largest annual cultural, literary and sports festival.
