AIIMS faculty question promotion to teachers

September 13, 2010 04:32 pm | Updated 04:32 pm IST - NEW DELHI:

A section of the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences faculty has written to the Union Health Minister regarding the propriety of allowing promotions to 164 assistant professors appointed in 2003, whose appointment has been challenged in the Delhi High Court on grounds of violating reservation norms.

The case is pending for final hearing before a division bench of the Delhi High Court on October 27.

In its letter to the Union Health Minister, who is also the president of the Institution, the Forum for Rights and Equality, AIIMS, asked the Ministry to hold back its decision to conduct interviews for further promotion of the appointees and “allow the matter to be decided by the court on its merit”.

The Forum notes in the letter that in a recent comm-unication, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare had asked AIIMS to allow further promotions to the appointees whose very initial appointment is under challenge.

The letter adds that the action of the Ministry amounts to “interfering with the legal process but also was contrary to and in conflict with its sworn affidavit submitted to the Court”.
