All-India Institute of Medical Sciences' resident doctors continued their relay hunger strike on Tuesday demanding reinstatement of senior resident Dr. Shejoy P. Joshua who was dismissed after being charged with molestation of a seven-year-old boy admitted to the Institute this January.
Resident doctors of the Institute held a protest demonstration on Monday and then went on a hunger strike later in the evening.
‘Not ready for re-look'
“The Institute administration is not ready to re-look at the case so far,” said Institute Resident Doctors' Association president Dr. Debjyoti Karmakar.
“The doctors on relay hunger strike are wearing red badges and are continuing to work as per their schedule at the hospital. Patient care has not been hit in any manner and we will keep our hunger strike on till our demand for justice for Dr. Joshua is met,” said Dr. Karmakar.
“Though the Institute Director Dr. R. C. Deka met us twice on Monday, he did not show any interest in taking a re-look at the case. He has in fact left the decision to the Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad,” said another senior doctor who is part of the protest.
The Institute spokesperson Dr. Y.K. Gupta said: “The Institute Director has requested the doctors to end their protest and assured them that the matter will be taken up with Mr. Azad after July 15 when the Minister returns to India.”
