The Centre for Dental Education and Research, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has launched a 3D Scan CBCT and Advanced Oral Histopathology laboratory recently.
“Cone Beam CT Scan (CBCT) facility is the latest addition that will equip the experts in orthodontics, oral and maxillofacial surgeons and dental implantologists to plan surgeries and implant in 3D, create virtual patient and perform advance jaw surgery on computer screens and 3D models before operating in the theatre,” noted a release issued by AIIMS.
This advanced and unique facility will assist in better treatment outcomes and prediction before the surgery is actually undertaken by doctors.
“The Dental Centre at AIIMS is committed to providing state of the art advance dental treatment to the poor and needy population. In this context the installation of CBCT facility will help the doctors in more accurate diagnosis of various pathologies in head and neck region,” noted the release.
Minimal radiation
CBCT is a technology in which three dimensional view of skull and facial bones and soft tissues can be seen with minimal radiation.
This machine will also help in treatment planning for dental implants, providing prosthesis for patients who have lost part of their face due to cancer or trauma and also for orthognathic surgery planning in patients having cranio-facial deformities, syndromes and cleft lip and palate.
A doctor will be able to see the 3D image and with the help of software future results will be predicted like a virtual surgery.
Educating patients
Such tools are very effective in educating the patient about the expectations from a treatment may be a implant, orthodontic treatment or replacement of facial part.
It is also to mention that such facilities are available at very high rate in private sectors and an average person cannot afford such treatment.
“AIIMS will be able to provide these modalities literally at no cost,” said Prof. O.P. Kharbanda, chief Centre for Dental Education and Research, AIIMS.
