In connection with a pending suit for recovery of Rs.5 crore
The Delhi High Court on Tuesday sentenced actor Rajpal Yadav to 10 days’ imprisonment in a contempt of court case. However, his wife was awarded a lenient punishment of staying in the courtroom till rising of the Judge in view of the fact that she has a child to take care of.
The Court had earlier held the couple guilty of contempt of court in connection with a pending suit for recovery of Rs.5 crore from them.
The couple had been avoiding appearance before the Court for making their submission before pronouncement of the term of their sentence after being declared guilty of the charge.
M. G. Agarwal of Delhi has filed a suit for recovery of Rs.5 core from the couple.
“This case presents a shocking state of affairs. Rajpal and his wife have already been punished for contempt of court and the case has been kept pending only on the question of sentence,” Justice S. Muralidhar said while pronouncing the sentence for the couple.
“Instead of mitigating the contempt committed, the defendants (Yadavs) have systematically aggravated the contempt by making misleading statements in court and acting in defiance of the court’s order. Added to this unfortunate state of affairs is the untruths spoken by their counsel in the court,” the sentence order said.
