A 30-year-old actor who works in South Indian films has been arrested for allegedly assaulting a policeman while in an inebriated state in Lajpat Nagar here in the early hours of Friday.
The accused was previously involved in two cases of causing public nuisance.
The incident took place around 1 a.m. when Akash Jain was spotted by a team from the Police Control Room unit allegedly consuming liquor inside his car parked by the roadside at Shahi Market.
The team was there to attend to a call of an altercation with a vendor. Although the police personnel could not trace the vendor, they found Akash allegedly consuming alcohol.
When they enquired from him whether he had witnessed the fight, he purportedly entered into a heated exchange with one of the policemen. The accused then assaulted him and tore his uniform.
Other team members intervened and overpowered Akash, following which he was taken to the area police station where he allegedly misbehaved with the Station House Officer.
Following his medical examination, the police arrested him for assaulting a public servant.
“On a couple of occasions he has indulged in causing public nuisance while in an inebriated state. In the previous cases, he had attacked people with glass bottles. Two cases were registered against him in this regard,” said a police officer.
Preliminary enquiries revealed that Akash, who lives with his family in Amar Colony, earlier worked as a model in Mumbai. He then got a break in South Indian movies and played the role of a villain.
