Members of the BJP-affiliated Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) on Friday took out a protest march at India Gate against an event in support of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru at Jawaharlal Nehru University.
Ninety of the protesters were detained following the event.
Another protest was organised by the ABVP outside the JNU gate as well.
Terming the event an “anti-national” activity, ABVP has been demanding the expulsion of its organisers from the varsity. ABVP’s Delhi Secretary Saket Bahuguna said: “How can such activities be tolerated at an educational institution? Democracy does not mean we can abuse the Constitution which guarantees us democracy”.
Sakshi Bharwaj, a JNU student and an ABVP member, said: “This is a total abuse of our Constitution and shameful for our motherland. We want their suspension and if they think we are intolerant, then yes we are.”
Slogans like: “JNU students are wasting tax-payers money” and “anti-national activity cannot be tolerated in India” were shouted during the protest. Placards like: “ Ghar ghar me ghus kar marenge jis ghar se afzal niklega (We will kill everyone who tries to be like Afzal)” were also seen at the protest venue.
Marking the death anniversary of Guru, a group of students on Tuesday held an event on the campus and shouted slogans against the government. Meanwhile, residents from Munirka village also staged a protest outside the JNU gate saying that anti-national activities have been going on in the university and that it should be shut down.
