Explaining its position vis-à-vis RTI activist Chandra Mohan Sharma, who faked his own death to live with a woman he was in love with, the Aam Aadmi Party on Friday said it had only asked for a fair probe and never pointed fingers at anyone.

Speaking to journalists, party leader Yogendra Yadav said in the changed circumstances the party wants that Sharma be brought to justice and delivered the strictest possible punishment.

“Soon after his (suspected) death, it was his wife who approached us. The police had reported the case as a simple accident. We had said that it did not appear to be a mere accident and it should be probed. And the investigations needed to be swift and fair, and if need be conducted by the Central Bureau of Investigation,” he said.

Responding to questions about the changed circumstances and whether their initial position had caused any embarrassment to the party, Mr. Yadav said, “Even if the investigation has established that the presumed victim himself is the accused, it is clear that the theory of accident was an incorrect one. This was a serious crime. I should remind you that never had the AAP claimed that we knew or could predict what the outcome of the probe would be.”

The AAP leader also added that one should not forget that the woman (Sharma's wife) who approached us was a victim then and remains one, the situation notwithstanding.
