The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) will hold an Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) “hackathon” on Saturday, when the Election Commission is scheduled to hold the “EVM Challenge” to prove allegations of tampering.
According to the party, the EC’s demonstration will not convince citizens that the EVMs cannot be tampered with by “insiders with control”. “The Commission’s demonstration will achieve nothing. To prove that, we will conduct a parallel demonstration under the same conditions the panel has proposed—usage of visual inspection and pressing of keys. No other hardware or software experiments will be allowed,” the party said.
Software hacks
Senior party leaders said the idea was to show that under the same conditions, even its prototype EVM cannot be tampered with. “We have consistently demonstrated that EVMs can be tampered with through changes in the motherboard, software Trojans and hardware hacks,” the party said.
The AAP has invited experts who want to try breaking the party’s EVM prototype. “We will open a website for participants to register themselves,” said party spokesperson Saurabh Bhardwaj. The party also plans on inviting political parties, the election panel and tech firms.
