The Aam Aadmi Party has offered free legal aid to the family of a 48-year-old man who succumbed to his burn injuries after he was allegedly set ablaze by two police constables at Neb Sarai here a few days ago. Both the policemen have been arrested.

“AAP’s candidate from Malviya Nagar constituency, Somnath Bharti, who is a lawyer by profession, has promised the family free legal service till they get proper justice and also to take care of the family’s welfare,” said a party spokesperson.

Chand’s son Naveen has alleged that his father was burnt alive by two policemen, Raj Kumar and Surendra Kumar. “Naveen had called AAP’s auto helpline after the incident and since then party has been doing its best to take care of him and his family. AAP had extended all possible help to the family get an FIR registered against the accused as the police were initially trying to avoid it. AAP has also deployed its volunteers to take care of Naveen and ensure that he is not threatened to retract,” said the party member, adding that Naveen had demanded that the accused policemen be sentenced to death.

The accused policemen have been accused of extracting money from Chand’s son for allowing him to ply an auto-rickshaw under their jurisdiction. The family members have alleged that Chand had gone to the duo to spare his son, whom they had detained for alleged non-payment of a one-time bribe of Rs.20,000, when he was set afire.
