Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Delhi convener Dilip Pandey on Sunday started the ‘Spot the Kachra’ campaign over unattended garbage in east Delhi’s Gandhi Nagar. The campaign aims to “name and shame” the BJP-ruled civic bodies, as the responsibility to clean the streets rests with them.
AAP volunteers, along with Mr. Pandey, put up red hand-shaped stickers on walls pointing towards garbage strewn on the street. The sticker read: “Spot the Kachra: it is BJP-ruled MCDs’ duty to clear this filth”.
Assigning responsibility
The campaign comes within a week of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s appeal for cross-party unity to tackle the rising cases of chikungunya and dengue.
“The campaign will cover all the 70 Assembly constituencies in one week,” Mr. Pandey said. The campaign aims to make people aware that it is the sole responsibility of the civic bodies to keep the city clean and free of mosquitoes, “as the message often gets lost due to multiplicity of authorities in Delhi”, the AAP leader said.
The AAP government had on Thursday launched a month-long fogging drive across the city, stating that it was forced to take up the work due to the failure of the BJP-led corporations to do so.
“The BJP-led civic bodies are playing with the health of Delhiites,” Mr. Pandey said.
The move is strategic as the municipal elections are slated in April next year.
