In a major overhaul after many senior leaders decided to give up the posts they held to take responsibilty for the dismal performance in the municipal elections, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Saturday decided to strengthen its presence in the Capital from the booth-level upwards.

Major overhaul

At an hour-long meeting where all legislators — including Okhla MLA Amantullah Khan — were in attendance, a senior party leader said the move was aimed at “increasing the say of MLAs” in decision-making.

“Many district in-charges have been rotated. They have now been assigned the responsibility of appointing ward or booth-level in-charges, in consultation with local MLAs, for each constituency represented by the party,” said the leader.

Proceeding in phases

According to a source, AAP national convenor and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will preside over a programme at the Punjabi Bagh Club in north-west Delhi on May 21, where as many as 3,000 booth in-charges are expected to be present.

“The party is proceeding in phases - from the national level Political Affairs Committee to the State level. The objective is to strengthen the party from the ground-level up,” the leader added.

Going the BJP way?

Incidentally, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which swept the civic polls, is also of a similar view.

BJP national president Amit Shah had presided over a programme for booth-level workers in Delhi, which was followed by a similar event to thank them for their contribution towards the victory.
