If you like to browse through books at a leisurely pace without having to make space for someone or worry if someone is over your shoulder waiting to pick up the book after you are done, the Delhi Book Fair-2014 is a place to visit.
Unlike in the past the fair has not seen a heavy rush probably because of the growing trend of buying books online. As you enter you see people leaving empty handed instead of lugging along a bag full of books.
Mitali, a student of Delhi University says she chose to visit the fair on a Monday afternoon with her friends after college so that she could enjoy the air conditioned environment and check out the exhibition without being jostled about.
Her friend Priyanka adds: “People in college did not want to join us as they purchase books online but I like the process of physically buying a book. Also, I love the smell of old books and I am hoping that there are a few I can get a good bargain on.”
The stalls which have posters that say “pick any for Rs.100 or Rs.50” have the most rush around them followed closely by stalls selling audio and visual teaching aids for students.
There are a few out of print editions and antique books on offer that you will probably not find in a conventional book store.
The exhibition has launched an android application to guide visitors around the exhibition. It can be downloaded free from the Google PlayStore.
The fair is also home to the 16 Stationery and Office Automation Fair. The exhibition is on till August 31 between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. at halls 8-12 at Pragati Maidan. There is a ferry service from the gate to the exhibition hall. Entry ticket is Rs. 20.
