Hundreds of women from Dwarka in south-west Delhi on Saturday came out in support of #IWillGoOut campaign, launched on the social media in protest against the Bengaluru mass molestation case.
The event was organised in response to a call by various women organisations to hold programmes and express solidarity with the victims of the Bengaluru incident on New Year’s Eve.
The theme of the function was to fight violence against women and assert their right to go out anywhere, any time as they wish.
The programme saw music, song and dance performances highlighting the rights of women to live without fear and apprehensions.
Permit problem
The celebration was organised on the premises of a private school as the Delhi Police did not permit the organisers to hold it at an open place.
A group of 16 autonomous organisations from Dwarka came together to organise the function at Sector 7. Addressing the gathering, Delhi Commission for Women chairperson Swati Maliwal lamented the pathetic state of investigation and prosecution of accused in cases of crime against women.
Rights activist Jagmati Sangwan in her address said the Bengaluru incident had lowered the dignity of the country.
She also criticised the Delhi Police for not allowing the organisers to hold the function in an open space.
Earlier in the day, a march was held from Barakhamba to Jantar Mantar as part of the #IWillGoOut campaign.
