: Out to deliver her marriage invitation cards, a 25-year-old woman met a tragic death after falling off a DTC bus and getting run over under its wheels on Tuesday.

The victim, Jyoti, served as a nurse at Ayushman Hospital before she quit the job for her marriage that was scheduled for February 1, said Surender Kumar, DCP (South-West).

A resident of Najafgarh, Jyoti, her mother and some friends had boarded a DTC bus that plies on route number 835, between Tilak Nagar and Dhansa Border. The police said they were all standing near the rear gate of the bus. “As the bus reached pillar number 800, the driver opened the doors, causing Jyoti to fall off the running vehicle,” said the DCP.

Efforts in vain

Before the woman could get on her feet, she was run over by the rear wheels of the bus. Her mother and friends raised an alarm in a bid to draw the driver’s attention, but it was too late by then. “She was killed on the spot,” the DCP added.

Driver caught

The accident drew the attention of passers-by, who forced the bus to come to a halt and caught the driver. The police subsequently arrived at the spot and apprehended him. The driver is being questioned about the circumstances under which he opened the bus gates while the vehicle was running.
