Private trucks to remove garbage

January 08, 2017 12:31 am | Updated 12:31 am IST - NEW DELHI:

The East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) on Saturday decided to deploy trucks operated by private contractors to lift garbage from dhalaos .

Garbage has not been collected since Thursday, which was a public holiday, and the workers have been on strike since Friday. As a result, the garbage dumps and streets of east Delhi have been accumulating trash.

To ensure that residents are not inconvenienced, the EDMC will deploy 13 trucks in the Shahdara (South) Zone and 30 trucks in the Shahdara (North) Zone from Sunday to lift garbage from dhalaos and transport it to the Ghazipur landfill. The Deputy Commissioners of the zones have asked the local police for help ensure that the protesting workers don’t hinder the work.

The last time the workers had gone on strike in 2016 they had tried to prevent the lifting of garbage by private contractors.
