Municipal workers to protest at Civic Centre

January 18, 2017 12:35 am | Updated 12:35 am IST - NEW DELHI:

Employees of the north and east Delhi municipal corporations are planning to hold a demonstration at the Civic Centre on Wednesday to protest against late salaries.

While the cash-strapped civic bodies managed to pay their sanitation workers recently, the rest of the staff has not received salaries for two to four months.

Cash-strapped

The East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) only paid sanitation workers last week when they went on strike.

The north corporation paid sanitation workers their salaries for December last week. The remaining staff, including teachers, engineers, horticulture department workers and doctors, have not been paid.

On Wednesday, workers from the various departments of the two civic bodies are expected to gather at the Civic Centre for the protest.

“Sanitation workers were paid, but the rest of the employees are yet to get their salaries. Some people haven’t been paid for four months. We are fighting for the rights of all municipal workers across Delhi,” said Rajendra Mewati, general-secretary of the United Front of MCD Employees.

Due to a financial crisis, workers of the two civic bodies have protested several times over the past two years, with sanitation staff going on strike six times.
