In an effort to “reinstate the power of love and unity” and oppose “Right-wing divisive forces,” the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) on Tuesday held a ‘Love Parade’ at Delhi University’s Faculty of Arts to mark Valentine’s Day.
Beginning with a music performance by some DU students, the event unfolded with several songs and dances that celebrated the spirit of love and rejected all forces that threaten to stifle it.
“All forms of love”
“We have gathered here to celebrate the spirit of love and freedom. By love, I mean all forms of love — between a couple, between friends or between parents and children, and so on. It should always be celebrated and not censured like it is by the Bajrang Dal, Vishwa Hindu Parishad and other Right-wing organisations. So this programme is also a reminder to such divisive groups,” NSUI national secretary Fairoz Khan.
Pinky Baishya of the NSUI said: “Today is a significant day as people celebrate love. To make it special, we have planned different activities here, including singing and dance competitions, and some interesting games especially designed for couples. We will give prizes at the end of the programme.”
The gathering, which took shape of a huddle, included more than a hundred people, mostly youngsters from different colleges. Poems and songs appreciating the power of love added to the jubilant air for over two hours.
Robin Sharma and Rajshree G., a couple present at the event, said: “This programme seeks to celebrate the importance of love and happiness. It’s a wonderful thing. People celebrate the day in different ways, like going for movies or lunch, etc. The point is to have a good time together and that is why we’ve come here.”
“It’s really nice to be here. The atmosphere here is so romantic. Love is in the air,” said Geetanjali Singh, a student of Miranda House.
