House panel report indicts SDMC Commissioner

Committee likely to table its findings in the Assembly today

January 17, 2017 01:31 am | Updated 01:31 am IST - New Delhi:

The Delhi Assembly’s Questions and Reference Committee is likely to table its report, which indicts the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) Commissioner for ‘intentionally’ not using his financial powers to allow the MLAs to carry out civic works, in the House during the winter session that begins on Tuesday.

As per sources, the report of the panel has suggested that action be taken against the commissioner.

“It was found in the proceedings that the SDMC Commissioner had intentionally not used his financial powers and didn’t allow the MLA-LAD fund to be used for civic works. The Delhi Assembly can take disciplinary action against him,” said sources.

The panel had summoned the SDMC Commissioner last month after AAP’s Greater Kailash MLA Saurabh Bhardwaj had complained that the the civic body had “lied” regarding a question about MLA-LAD funds, and wasn’t allowing the MLAs to carry out any development work.

The SDMC had also passed a resolution to not allow the MLAs to spend their funds on municipal works.

With the municipal elections slated for May this year, the race to take up civic work has become a tussle between the municipal councillors and the AAP MLAs.

Assembly session

Even during the two-day long winter session of the Delhi Assembly, the functioning of the Municipal Corporations will be the main topic of discussion.

Invite to L-G

Meanwhile, the Opposition has plans to attack the AAP dispensation for not inviting the new Lieutenant-Governor to address the House. Slamming the BJP leaders, Assembly Speaker Ram Niwas Goel said that the Opposition was unnecessarily stoking a controversy.

No new bills

The government isn’t likely to introduce any new Bill during the session. AAP MLAs are expected to raise local issues under Section 280 on floor of the House. They are also likely to raise the issue of the strike by sanitation workers over non-payment of salaries, demonetisation and other matters.

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who returned to Delhi on Monday after campaigning in Punjab, will attend the House proceedings.

“The Business Advisory Committee of the Delhi Assembly has called a meeting on Tuesday before the House proceedings. In the meeting, the final agenda will be taken up,” a senior official said.
