Gurugram workers protest

January 17, 2017 01:31 am | Updated 01:31 am IST - GURUGRAM:

A large number of contract workers sat on a dharna near the mini-secretariat here on Monday in protest against the two-wheeler company Hero Motocorp’s decision to “dismiss” them without “prior notice”.

Sikander, one of the protesting workers, said that more than a thousand contract workers were “verbally” told to “proceed on leave” over the past two months citing slowdown due to demonetisation. “Now, many workers have got calls from the management asking them to get their dues settled. It means we have been dismissed,” he said.

Not willing to be identified, another worker alleged that more than 600 of the total 1,000 workers dismissed by the company were eligible for regularisation as per the law and that the slowdown was not the real reason behind the “dismissal”. “It seems the company did not want to regularise workers,” he said.
