Cong: women to contest from general wards too

: Women councillors whose wards have gone from reserved to general category would be asked to contest once again from the same area, Delhi Congress chief Ajay Maken said on Wednesday.

In 2012, the civic bodies of Delhi implemented a 50% reservation for women. As per the Delhi State Election Commission announcement, the seats reserved for women for the 2017 municipal polls have changed. Mr. Maken said that the women who contested and won the 2012 polls from reserved seats would be invited to contest again from their wards, even though they have now become general seats.

“Just because the reservation is no longer there doesn’t mean the women who represented the wards won’t get to contest again. We will be asking them to once again contest from the same ward. This is the true spirit of women’s empowerment,” Mr. Maken said.
