An eight-month-old girl was sexually assaulted by her 28-year-old cousin in Shakurpur Basti, the police said on Monday. The accused has been arrested.

The police said that the incident took place on Sunday and the baby suffered severe injuries to her vital organs. She is undergoing treatment.

The parents of the victim were away at work and had left the baby and her two-year-old sister at home with family members, said the police. The victim’s family lives on the first floor while the other family members live on the ground floor.

Lying in pool of blood

The accused, Suraj, allegedly took the child to another part of the building on the pretext of playing with her. Later, when the child’s mother returned home, she found the baby lying in a pool of blood. She immediately rushed her to a hospital.

“On returning home, the mother found the baby unconscious and bleeding from her private parts. The hospital informed the police about the case,” said a senior police official.

Suraj was questioned during preliminary probe as he was the prime suspect. Later, he tried to abscond but was traced and detained. “During interrogation, he confessed. A case has been registered under relevant section of POCSO Act,” said Aslam Khan, DCP (North West).
