“Five thousand National Cadet Corps boys and girls will assist in the smooth conduct of the upcoming Commonwealth Games,” said NCC Director General Lieutenant-General R. K. Karwal here on Tuesday. He added that the selection process for the same has been completed and the training will commence soon.

Addressing a press conference, Lt-Gen Karwal said the NCC Delhi Directorate will start the Yamuna Pollution Awareness Campaign next month. The Ganga Pollution Awareness Campaign organised from Hardwar to Bihar earlier, was a huge success, he added.

Lt-Gen Karwal said the Defence Ministry had approved a proposal to hire services of ex-Servicemen to meet the shortage of Army officers in the NCC. “The proposal is being examined by the Union Finance Ministry. It may be noted that the Government has approved raising the strength of NCC cadets from the present 13 lakh to 15 lakh.”

A proposal seeking increase in the ratio of girl cadets from present 23 per cent to 33 per cent has also got the Defence Ministry’s nod. The number of cadets deputed under the Youth Exchange Programme will be doubled to 200 from next year, he added.
