Four men have been arrested for allegedly impersonating police officers and robbing people.

Rohit (22), Pawan (30), Suraj (23) and Deepak (27) would lure victims by offering them a lift in luxury cars and rob them, said the police. They even bought a wireless set to pass off as policemen and have admitted to involvement in at least 40 robberies.

Tip-off

Deputy Commissioner of Police (west) Vijay Kumar said they were arrested on July 23 following a tip-off.

The incident was reported on the intervening night of July 10 and 11. Dinesh Kumar was looking for a way to reach Anand Vihar railway station from Pankha Road, when a fellow traveller struck a conversation with him.

“Soon after he shared his travel plan with the stranger, a car stopped near them and the occupants offered to drop them at the station. The driver introduced himself as Sub-Inspector Satbir and his co-passenger as Sub-Inspector Rajbir, who was handling the wireless set,” said the officer.

The ‘officers’ flashed a message on the wireless about a driver speeding in a red car after being asked to stop for checking. They asked the victim to take out his belongings for verification. Convinced they were bona fide police officers, the victim handed over his cell phone, cash and ATM card along with the PIN to them.

The ‘officers’ soon abandoned him on a lonely stretch and fled with his belongings. They used his card to withdraw ₹80,000 and shop at a mall.

Probe revealed that Rohit and Deepak were accomplices as well as cousins. The accused would split the booty equally and spend money the money on wine, women and clothes.
