The Delhi government has allocated ₹3,113 crore for housing and urban development. The focus of the government is to make Delhi an open defection-free city.

Taking the Centre’s Swachh Bharat Mission forward, the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) has, over the past two years, constructed 8,000 toilets. It had planned to construct 6,000 more toilets by March 31.

“Due to demonetisation and stopping of all construction work in November due to high air pollution levels, the deadline for constructing the 6,000 toilets was pushed to June,” said an official.

The government has announced the construction of 5,000 more toilets by March 2018 to achieve the target of 19,000 toilets.

More night shelters for the homeless are expected to come up as well. The government has already upgraded facilities provided at the existing shelters. The capacity in 266 night shelters has been increased to 21,724. The government has over the past two years rehabilitated 5,000 slum dwellers.
