A three-year-old girl died after falling into an open underground water tank on Sunday in south-east Delhi’s Tigri J.J. colony on Sunday.

The victim was identified as Alifa, a resident of Sangam Vihar.

According to the police, the girl had gone to visit her grandmother and was playing in the area when she fell into the tank.

Family in the dark

“The grandmother was not at home when the incident happened,” said a senior police officer.

Alifa’s family realised she was missing when they returned home in the afternoon and started looking for her along with neighbours. Her body was found after a couple of hours, when somebody peeped into the tank. The girl was rushed to a hospital, where she was declared brought dead.

The police have registered a case under Section 304A (causing death by negligence) of the IPC.
