In yet another accident involving two-wheelers, three men were killed in the early hours of Friday, taking the total count to seven over the last 48 hours.
The latest accident can be attributed to a combination of triple-riding without helmets and riding on the wrong side.
All the three deceased were friends and hailed from Tamil Nadu. Residents of Moti Bagh in South Delhi, the trio was returning home after watching the Vijay-starrer Tamil film ‘Theri’.
The accident took place around 3 a.m. on the stretch of road from Dhaula Kuan to Karol Bagh. On their way back from Narayana, after watching the film, the three perhaps wanted to take a short cut to their home in Moti Bagh’s Shastri Market and started riding on the wrong side of the road in Dhaula Kuan to avoid the long route. .
“The motorcyclist was possibly going at high speed when it collided against the road divider. The three riders hit their heads against the divider and fell unconscious. None of them was wearing a helmet,” said an investigator, ruling out the possibility of a hit-and-run case.
Since a PCR van is deployed close to the accident site round the clock, the policemen rushed to the spot. “All the three victims were moved to AIIMS trauma centre in two separate PCR vans within five minutes of the accident. But, they were possibly killed on the spot,” said the investigator.
The victims have been identified as Suresh, 27, Swami, 26, and 36-year-old Senthil. The police said that while the motorcycle belonged to Senthil’s father, it remains unknown who was riding the two-wheeler. None of the three were under the influence of alcohol, doctors told the police.
Suresh worked for a private company in Manesar while the other two worked as drivers. Natives of Salem in Tamil Nadu, all three lived with their respective families in Moti Bagh.
“Suresh’s mother had called him minutes before the accident. He had said he would take 5-10 minutes to reach home. She had not eaten and was waiting for him to return home,” said Suresh’s father Shivam. When Shivam called his son on his mobile phone a few minutes later, he received no response. The families got to know about the deaths after they received a call from the local police post.
Shivam said his son had recently taken an exam for a job in the Railways. “My son would always tell me that he would pull us out of poverty,” said Shivam who works for a private company.
This death is the fourth in a series of accidents in the city involving motorcyclists. A day earlier, two men were killed in Outer Delhi’s Alipur when their motorcycle was run over by an unidentified vehicle. In the two other incidents, an Army man and a DU student were killed in separate accidents.
With 25 motorcyclists killed in the first two months of this year, the number of deaths has witnessed a 53 per cent jump as compared to the same period last year.
