A 27-year-old man was shot dead and his cousin was injured in south Delhi’s Mehrauli on Friday night by two persons after a drunken brawl. The police have arrested one person.

Sumit, resident of Chhatarpur, was fired upon twice by his neighbours Sandeep Gupta and Ashish Kochar when he tried to stop a fight between his cousin Nitin and the two accused.

The police said that the victims and accused, who lived in the same locality, had gone to attend a wedding where all of them allegedly got drunk.

When they returned, an argument broke out between Nitin and Sandeep.

“The two had an argument as Sandeep didn’t like the way Nitin spoke to him. Sandeep told Nitin that he is younger and should talk to him with respect,” said a senior police officer.

The argument turned into a brawl and Sumit rushed to his cousin’s aid. The accused whipped out a pistol and shot at the duo. The victims were rushed to hospital where Sumit was declared brought dead due to a fatal gunshot injury to his head. Nitin is out of danger, said the police.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (south) Romil Baaniya said that a case of murder has been registered. Sandeep has been arrested.
