Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Monday said the government has initiated the process of hiring 20,000 teachers in order to provide quality education in government-run schools.

Speaking at the public meeting of the Arvind Kejriwal Cabinet, Mr. Sisodia, who also holds the Education portfolio, said the new recruitment will help in maintaining the ideal 1:40 teacher student ration in the city schools.

“We will recruit 20,000 teachers over the next one year. The process has been initiated in which we would also regularise the deserving guest teachers. A separate test will be conducted for them. Those who clear it, will be regularised,” Mr. Sisodia said.

The Deputy Chief Minister also asserted that State government has already initiated the process for construction of 500 new schools, out of which 100 schools would be model schools.

“Construction of 45 schools has already been started, while 79 schools have been identified that would run in double shifts. We would also install CCTV cameras in these schools that would help in keeping a tab on teachers’ absenteeism as well as rowdy students,” Mr. Sisodia said.

He added that the State government is planning to open three new universities in order to promote higher education, especially vocational studies.

Replying to a question from the audience, Mr. Sisodia also promised to streamline the process of admission in private schools and their fee structure.

“The present rules do not allow the government to act beyond cancelling the recognition of errant schools. We are in the process of amending the relevant Acts. Things would change from the next academic session,” Mr. Sidodia said.

The new recruitment will help maintain the ideal 1:40 teacher-student ration in city schools, said the Deputy Chief Minister
