A constable allegedly chased and caught two men who threatened a vendor at gunpoint on Tuesday morning, the police said.

The accused fled in a cab when the victim raised an alarm. His cries for help alerted Constable Jagbir, who caught the accused with the help of the cab driver.

The accused have been identified as Abdul Wahab (23) and Qamar Nizami (19), both residents of south Delhi’s Abul Fazal Enclave.

Food payment

The accused had gone to a food joint near Hazrat Nizamuddin railway station early on Tuesday. When the vendor asked for payment, they threatened him at gunpoint and left in a cab, said the police.

The vendor immediately informed a policeman on a bike, who was passing the area on routine patrolling duty. Mr. Jagbir went after the accused and intercepted the cab just as it was about to take the Barapullah elevated road. “After being waylaid by the constable, one of the accused tried to run away. Mr. Jagbir asked the driver to nab the other accused while he chased the first one. Abdul and Qamar were taken to a police station,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (South-East) Chinmoy Biswal.

Abdul and Qamar’s interrogation led to the recovery of a motorcycle they had stolen from Karol Bagh and parked at the railway station parking lot.

Stolen bike

“We did not know about the bike theft. A parking receipt was found in Qamar’s packet. His interrogation revealed that they had stolen the bike for a joyride and used to commit street crimes to make a quick buck,” he said.

Abdul pursued an engineering course from a college in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, but dropped out in the third year. Then, he did various professional courses, including safety engineering. He is currently working with a private company.

“Qamar is pursuing a diploma in polytechnic civil engineering from Jamia Millia Islamia,” added Mr. Biswal.
