Two persons have been arrested for allegedly stealing foreign currency worth ₹2.13 crore here, the police on Saturday, adding that one of the accused is a member of Neeraj Bawana gang.
The accused have been identified as Daljeet Singh alias Bablu (39) and Jasbir Singh (40), Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Vijay Kumar said.
“Jasbir is a member of Neeraj Bawana gang and was arrested in 2008 by Crime Branch in a fake currency case. He was again held in 2009 for causing hurt,” the officer said.
The police said that one Rakesh Godra, businessman dealing in sale and purchase of foreign goods in Sirsa and resident of Delhi, approached them and reported a theft of ₹10.3 lakh along with some foreign currency.
Mr. Godra allegedly raised suspicion on his former employee Ratan who went missing soon after the incident that had taken place in the second week of April.
During investigation, it was revealed that Ratan, resident of Sirsa, was employed by Mr. Godra a month ago but his services were terminated because of bad behaviour, Mr. Kumar said.
“Ratan approached Mr. Godra’s business partner Lovely on April 11 and requested him to stay at the former’s residence as he had some work in Delhi. During this time, Mr. Godra was away for work in Kota,” the DCP added.
The next night, Ratan allegedly got drunk with Mr. Godra’s other employees.
Allowed entrance
Following this, when everyone was asleep, Ratan allowed Daljit and Jasbir to enter the premises and flee away with the money.
“The next morning, Ratan pretended that he did not know anything and left the premises,” said Mr. Kumar adding that he is still absconding.
With the help of human and technical surveillance, Daljit was arrested from Hauz Khas on April 18.
During interrogation, he allegedly told the police that they had planned to flee to Bangkok and but later decided that one of them will get arrested so that the case settles down.
“All the airports were then informed and in a controlled operation, Jasbir was arrested from Maharashtra on Friday with 2,42,500 Euros [₹1.80 lakh],” Mr. Kumar said.
Subsequent raids
The police said that in the subsequent raids on the instance of the accused, they recovered foreign currency worth ₹33.27 lakh and ₹94,127 along with mobiles and two passports.
