Two men have been arrested for allegedly extorting money on the pretext of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funding, the police said on Tuesday.

CSR funds

The accused, identified as Susheel Tripathi (25) and Md. Danish (32), allegedly acted as middlemen for NGOs and corporates to facilitate money transfer of CSR funds, the police said.

A countrymade pistol and two live cartridges were seized from Danish, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (South-East) Chinmoy Biswal.

On June 16, an assistant with a CA firm at Barakhamba Road approached the Sarita Vihar police station with a complaint against Tripathi and Danish. He alleged that his friends Hari Om and Kuldeep were being held captive by the two accused.

Nearly four months ago, the accused visited his office and introduced themselves as freelance agents with companies that facilitate funding under the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

He further stated thatHari and Kuldeep’s kidnappers had demanded ₹8 lakh for their release, the police said.

The complainant met Tripathi and Danish at Shaheen Bagh and tried to hand over a cheque of ₹2.74 lakh but they demanded ₹8 lakh. The complainant, on directions of a police team, arranged a meeting with the accused at Shaheen Bagh.

A trap was laid, and Tripathi and Danish were arrested, he added. During interrogation, the accused revealed that due to unemployment and in order to lead a luxury life they agreed to help their accomplice Deepak Shukla.

Shukla told them that he managed donations to NGOs from companies and that the black money of any company could be converted into white money through NGO donations, said the officer.
