A 30-year-old woman doctor was attacked with acid allegedly by two bike-borne men in West Delhi’s Rajouri Garden on Tuesday morning.

The incident took place around 9-30 a.m. when the victim identified as Amrit Kaur was on her way to work on her two wheeler. While the crime took place in a busy market, not many people were present in the morning. The assailants drove past her, threw acid on her, snatched her bag and fled away.

The entire incident was captured in two closed circuit television cameras installed near the spot. The police have taken the footage in their possession and are examining it to get a clue about the accused.

“The woman was on her way to ESI Hospital in Rajouri Garden where she worked. When she was near her hospital, the pillion rider threw an acid-like chemical on her, snatched her bag and fled. Since the assailants were wearing helmet, their identity could not be established. The victim sustained burn injuries and was rushed to the same hospital where she worked. She has been referred to All India Institute of Medical Sciences,” said a senior police officer.

The footage from the CCTV cameras shows the assailants attacking the woman and driving away and the woman crying in pain. Though some people saw the girl being attacked, no one came to help her.

The footage also showed a man living in a house nearby coming down to help the woman.

The police are also questioning her friends and colleagues to determine whether she had any personal enmity or if anyone held a grudge against her.

According to the police, the victim was going to get married soon and they suspect she was attacked by some spurned lover. They are investigating other possible angles as well.

Ms. Kaur was working at ESI Hospital in Rajouri Garden for the past two months. Before this, she was working at a hospital in Noida. In Delhi, she lived in Hari Nagar with her brother. Her father, a Deputy Inspector General with BSF, is currently posted in Madhya Pradesh.
