Two persons have been arrested in connection with the lynching of a young man who was allegedly trying to abduct a four-year-old girl in Khajuri Khas on June 24.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (North-East) A..K. Singla said the two accused, Mohammed Salim (25) and Ishtiaq (27), were neighbours of the girl and lived close to the spot where the incident took place.

Victim not identified

Thought the arrests were made on Saturday, the victim remains to be identified.

According to the police, efforts were on to identify other members of the mob that had attacked the man.

Mob booked under IPC

A case under Section 304 [Culpable homicide not amounting to murder] had earlier been registered against the mob.

According to investigators, the victim — who was in his early 30s — and another person had allegedly tried to abduct the four-year-old girl while she was playing in E-Block of Khajuri Khas. While the girl somehow managed to free herself, the duo was spotted by a woman who raised an alarm.

Locals standing nearby managed to catch hold of one of the men and thrashed him. In an attempt to get away, the man entered a building.

Seeing the gates of a house on the first floor open, he went inside.

However, the mob that was trailing him dragged him down from the first floor till the main street.

The police had then said that some members of the crowd were not even aware of why they were hitting the man. Some of them just called him a rapist and a thief and attacked him relentlessly. A PCR call was made informing the police about his bid to abduct the girl, but by the time the police reached t victim had been thrashed brutally.
